Streaming through an external camera can add new elements to your stream, such as zoom and different lens views, depending on your device. Using these devices does require a little more thought when setting up your stream to maintain a consistent stream.
Determining your upload speed is a big factor in determining the resolution quality of your stream. We recommend testing your network connection with an online platform or tool to determine your upload speed.
Upload speed is a much better predictor of stream performance than the number of bars you see on your mobile device. Conduct the speed test on the same network that you’ll be streaming your event and do it close to the event time. Network connectivity is impacted if other users are on the same carrier or Wi-Fi network as you.
Please refer to the chart below for recommendations based on available upload speeds.
Stream Quality |
Min-Max Upload Bitrate |
Est. Data Usage (GB/HR) |
1080p (Full HD) |
4.5 - 9 Mbps |
2 GB - 4 GB |
720p (HD) |
2.5 - 6 Mbps |
1.2 GB - 2.7 GB |
480p (SD) |
1 - 2 Mbps |
450 - 900 MB |
360p |
0.4 - 1.0 Mbps |
180 MB - 450 MB |
We recommend having an available upload speed that’s about 1.5–2 times higher than your streaming bitrate. This extra bandwidth helps prevent lag or dropped frames caused by small network fluctuations.
Example: Network speed test shows 4.2 Mbps available upload speed, we would suggest that you stream using 480p for your resolution setting.
If available on your device, streaming in HEVC (H.265) can provide the same quality as older standards (H.264) while using up to 30-50% less data.
Please refer to instructions from Mevo and GoPro to adjust your resolution for your specific device.
You can monitor the quality of you live stream through an external camera to determine if you need to make adjustments due to drops in signal during your broadcast. Please visit our Monitor Network Health While Broadcasting Video support article for more information.
