This guide is a quick overview of the best practices for streaming and recording your basketball event. This is not an in-depth guide, but is a helpful quick checklist to help keep you on track each game. This guide is available to download as a 1-page PDF document with the button below if you would like to print a physical version for game day.
Recording & Streaming Basketball
A steady, elevated wide shot and a tested connection make the biggest difference. Work through the three phases below in order.
1 Set Up · Before Tipoff
CAMERA PLACEMENT
- Elevated at midcourt. Half court, above the spectators, both baskets in view.
- Landscape and wide. Full court width and the near corners. No digital zoom.
- Secure the mount. Sturdy tripod or clamp. Keep walkways, exits and benches clear.
DEVICE PREP
- Charge and power up. Full battery, plus external power for long games.
- Free up the device. Close other apps, Do Not Disturb on, battery saver off.
- Clear storage. Enough free space for the full game, not just the first half.
VIDEO & CONNECTION
- Prefer a stable network. Strong Wi-Fi or cellular. Avoid sign-in pages and congested networks.
- Lower quality if needed. A stable lower resolution beats an unreliable stream.
- Keep a local backup. A device recording protects the game if the connection drops.
Framing, focus, exposure, audio. Watch the test on a second device before tipoff, not the one that is filming.
2 Capture · During the Game
START EARLY
Go live five minutes before tipoff. Post the official team or event link and tell viewers when the broadcast begins.
Check battery, temperature, network, and framing. Leave the device on the mount once the stream is live.
AUDIO
Let the gym sound carry. Set up away from speakers and loud fans, and off the bench. Mute in overly noisy facilities.
Keep the score accurate. An active, synced scorekeeper on the correct event keeps the broadcast overlay right.
3 Share · After the Final Buzzer
Stop the stream, then confirm the save. Check the recording landed on the correct event before you pack up.
PRESERVE THE ORIGINAL
Keep the local file. Hold it until uploads and clips are confirmed. Label it with the date, teams, and game.
